The law allows central government to increase this levy, along with an existing landfill tax, to up to €120 per tonne without changing legislation. Local authorities are also allowed to raise a plastic bag levy to €0.70. But no increase in this levy has been agreed yet. The law, which also increases air pollution penalties, will enter force once a series of amendments to, for example, align it with some requirements of EU waste law, have been adopted. This process usually takes a few weeks, according to the ministry.
